The Towel Moment That Changed Everything: How One Act of Letting Go Reframed My View of Empowerment

As a high-achieving woman, I pride myself on my efficiency and attention to detail. My days are typically packed with back-to-back meetings, decision-making, and high-stakes problem-solving. At home, I carried that same level of excellence into how the dishwasher was loaded, how the kids' lunches were packed, and yes—even how towels were folded.

One Thursday afternoon, during a rare five-minute break between client calls, I walked into the laundry room and stopped cold. My daughter had folded an entire basket of towels. Except they weren't folded the way I usually do it. Some were rolled up like yoga mats, some were a half-fold shy of symmetry, and others barely looked folded at all.

My initial reaction? Correct her. Show her the right way. Take back the task.

But before I could say anything, she looked up at me and said, "I thought I’d help since you seemed really busy today."

That one sentence changed everything.

In that moment, I saw effort, not imperfection. I saw leadership—hers and mine—emerging in a new light. I saw what I had been doing wrong, not just at home, but in all aspects of my life: clinging to control in the name of quality, when in reality, I was robbing others of their opportunity to contribute.

That day, I started choosing differently. I chose to delegate with trust. I chose to welcome imperfection in service of participation. I chose to stop doing everything myself.

Letting go isn't about lowering your standards—it’s about building trust, fostering growth, and allowing others to rise.

It was a towel-folding moment that reminded me: real empowerment doesn’t come from doing it all. It comes from allowing others to do, to try, and to grow.
